Artist's Description

Next to the ancient cathedral of La Alberca is this statue, placed in 1996, "El Marrano de San Anton" and refers to the traditional feast of San Antonio on 13 June. But its meaning is much deeper: in these mountainous areas between Portugal and Spain there are traces of a mysterious cult called "Bad Pig". When the Roman Empire expanded up to here at the beginning of Christianity they imposed the cancellation of all local worship and therefore any cultural reference was irremediably lost.
Placing the statue of a pig next to the church therefore has a profound, even if hidden, meaning of a request for forgiveness for the destruction done to ancestral cultures.
