Artist's Description

Access to Edinburgh Castle is via the Esplanade, at the end of which runs the Dry Ditch, built between 1725 and 1742.
From the city below there are several more or less steep stairs but the most picturesque is probably the one that starts from the North bank of the Mound.
If you travel along it at night you can imagine still hearing the footsteps of the men on patrol while the sentries monitor from the top.
